Alcatraz Quartermaster Warehouse https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/alcatraz-quartermaster-warehouse/ Fri, 16 Sep 2016 20:35:28 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1487 Built in 1921, the Quartermaster Warehouse is a concrete reinforced building designed as a military storehouse to contain all the supplies for the officers’ quarters.  It later became the battery house and a multi-purpose storage space.  Today it still serves as the main source of power for the entire island.  Logistics of working on an island without permanent power, potable water, and cell phone reception are unique.  Furthermore, most of the work had to be done between September and March to accommodate the federally protected birds.  Most of the crumbling concrete was rehabilitated, new electrical and plumbing systems were added, new roof panels imported from England were installed (and repainted with the famous Alcatraz sign), and a freight lift was added next to new metal stairs — all while the island’s solar power center was kept operational. Furthermore, the east façade was painted in restored Native American political statements from the 1969 Indian Occupation; recreated by several of the original occupiers and their children.

Presidio Buildings 101 & 103 https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/presidio-buildings-101-103/ Thu, 04 Sep 2014 18:47:57 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=458 Adaptive reuse of two historic, army barracks buildings, originally built in the late 1800s, at the Presidio Main Post into unique, modern office spaces. Both buildings were seismically upgraded using an innovative fiber reinforcing scheme which saved the historic interior finishes from complete demolition and provided the client with more leasable square footage for tenants. A typical structural retrofit of an unreinforced masonry building of this type would require thick concrete walls at most of the exterior and load bearing walls inside the building. However, advancements in carbon fiber polymers for structural applications and the right mix of client priorities made this the perfect project to experiment on. The project received LEED Gold certification.
