Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/lafayette-orinda-presbyterian-church/ Thu, 29 Dec 2016 00:36:28 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1599 Plant completed a phased seismic renovation of an existing Presbyterian church in Lafayette, CA. The project required careful retrofit of cast-in-place concrete structural members that are also finish features of the building. Plant worked around the active church schedule to minimize disruption to activities, ensure public safety, and complete the project on schedule. Plant also performed interior/ADA improvements, including a new raised white oak chancel floor, all new theatrical lighting, new choir room addition, new HVAC system that had to be set via helicopter.

Alcatraz Quartermaster Warehouse https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/alcatraz-quartermaster-warehouse/ Fri, 16 Sep 2016 20:35:28 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1487 Built in 1921, the Quartermaster Warehouse is a concrete reinforced building designed as a military storehouse to contain all the supplies for the officers’ quarters.  It later became the battery house and a multi-purpose storage space.  Today it still serves as the main source of power for the entire island.  Logistics of working on an island without permanent power, potable water, and cell phone reception are unique.  Furthermore, most of the work had to be done between September and March to accommodate the federally protected birds.  Most of the crumbling concrete was rehabilitated, new electrical and plumbing systems were added, new roof panels imported from England were installed (and repainted with the famous Alcatraz sign), and a freight lift was added next to new metal stairs — all while the island’s solar power center was kept operational. Furthermore, the east façade was painted in restored Native American political statements from the 1969 Indian Occupation; recreated by several of the original occupiers and their children.

Walt Disney Family Museum https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/walt-disney-family-museum/ Thu, 11 Sep 2014 00:05:56 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=598 This project balanced rehabilitation of the historic former barracks on the main parade ground of the Presidio with the need to develop a visitor-friendly layout and infrastructure for multimedia programming around Walt Disney’s life and work. It involved three historic buildings and adhered to federal historic preservation standards. Work included a glass atrium gallery, restoring the original brick facades and extensively excavating and underpinning to a depth of 35 feet below grade to create an underground theater and sub-basement. The buildings structural systems were upgraded with a variety of seismic connections interwoven with shotcrete.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/st-marks-lutheran-church/ Wed, 10 Sep 2014 20:00:50 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=554 2006 SEISMIC REHABILITATION
Originally dedicated in 1895, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church This project focused on the seismic rehabilitation of the historic St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, which was originally dedicated in 1895. The building temporarily served as a hospital following the 1906 earthquake, having narrowly escaped the ensuing fires, and other than repairs and improvements, the structure and interiors remained largely unchanged from the original construction. The scope of the seismic retrofit work included center coring, shotcrete, and strengthening of floors and roof trusses. Plant constructed new toilet rooms, a kitchen and classrooms. Finishes were removed and installed for three original staircases and most of the doors and frames. Improvements were made to the heating, ventilation, plumbing, fire sprinkler and electrical systems.

2017 ELEVATOR INSTALLATION
Plant constructed a new addition containing a special access elevator to improve accessibility to each of the three levels at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. The project adhered to strict historical preservation requirements and very tight space constraints between the existing building and the property line.

Plant’s involvement started in 1989 with the renovation of the sanctuary and its 100-foot high dome. This was followed by a renovation of the Temple House in 1992 that included seismic bracing, new auditoriums and meeting rooms, a full-service kitchen, entirely new classroom and office spaces, and an exterior renovation. More recent work included refurbishments of the building’s exterior in 2003 and renovation of the altar, completed in 2006. Work was phased to allow the Temple to remain open throughout construction.

Olympic Club https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/olympic-club/ Thu, 04 Sep 2014 18:39:42 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=438 The phased historic renovation of the nation’s oldest athletic club, along with the new construction of a 10-story addition in a busy part of downtown San Francisco made for a large and very complex project. The renovation of the original 1910 building completely removed and replaced the upper two floors while maintaining the historic, masonry façade. Work included seismic upgrades and interior improvements to modernize the space. The new facility included a swimming pool with a moveable bottom, a gymnasium and several levels of parking.

Congregation Sherith Israel https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/congregation-sherith-israel/ Thu, 04 Sep 2014 17:44:48 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=364 April 2017: A seismic retrofit of the historic Congregation Sherith Israel built in 1905, including structural steel and concrete beams in the attic and dome, foundation strengthening, and concrete pilasters at the exterior spanning from the footing level to the roof. The project also included the installation of a new roof, dome waterproofing, historic façade repairs, and ADA upgrades to the interior space. The building remained fully functional with services throughout the week and on weekends, and all while preserving the historic elements.

February 2011: Phased seismic strengthening and facade stabilization of the Albert Pissis designed building in which the Congregation Sherith Israel has worshiped for over a century. The complex reinforcement involved nearly 100 vertical and horizontal center cores and the construction of a unique Nitonol wire “harp” around the 70-foot dome that will dampen the motion of brick perimeter walls in the event of an earthquake and restore alignments when the motion stops. Exterior work used chemicals and low-pressure water to remove paint and loose stone and reveal the varied colors of weathered Colusa sandstone.

September 1997: Renovation of the social hall and program offices of the Temple. Work consisted of structural reinforcement of the existing social hall and the joining of it to the adjacent Temple Building.
