Presidio Knolls School – Pioneer Hall https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/presidio-knolls-school-pioneer-hall/ Mon, 21 Dec 2015 16:53:08 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1247 The Presidio Knolls School was founded in 2008 as a preschool in the Marina district. The popular school quickly outgrew its original site and moved to its current location south of Market Street. With approximately 1.5 acres and multiple buildings, this former Catholic Archdiocese property will allow the school to continue to expand and reach its goal of serving preschool through eighth grade.

To accommodate the school’s growth, several buildings on campus were examined for renovation. The first to be selected was an existing contributing historic structure, renamed Pioneer Hall by the school. The renovation and repurposing of this existing wood-framed building included a voluntary seismic upgrade, lowering of the main floor, improvements to the vertical and horizontal enclosures, and new interior finishes for initial use as temporary classrooms and for future use as a gymnasium and multi-purpose space. This required careful coordination between Plant, the shoring engineer and structural engineer to keep the more than 100-year-old building standing while completing the complex structural upgrades. The newly renovated hall will serve the school well as it continues to grow.

Live Oak School https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/live-oak-school/ Mon, 21 Dec 2015 16:03:58 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1231 The expansion of this private elementary school into an adjacent building included two new classrooms, five offices, and a new main lobby and building entrance, which served as the first phase of a planned three-phase multi-year build-out during summer breaks. Plant was brought on at the late stages of the design process and successfully completed a mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and sprinkler (MEPS) design-build sequence in a tight 10-week construction schedule. Phase one construction was completed over the summer break on schedule for the first day of school.

The second phase of work involved reconfiguration of the interiors on the first and second floors to accommodate a grand hall assembly space for school gatherings and a kitchen on the first floor. New finishes were installed on both floors along with seismic bracing and new MEPS distribution for the reconfigured layout. Phase two was completed on schedule during the 10-week summer break.

Children’s Day School – Middle School Campus https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/childrens-day-school-middle-school-campus/ Thu, 17 Dec 2015 02:10:43 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1277 Originally constructed as a church, the building at 601 Dolores Street in San Francisco formerly served as a soup-kitchen and was most recently converted to a high-end, single-family residence before being sold to Children’s Day School. Renovation of the property for use as a Middle School consisted of removal of most of the interior floors and walls to make way for accessibility and seismic upgrades. The full interior build-out of the ground level, second level, mezzanine level, and upper tower levels provides classroom and administrative spaces for educational use. In this design, the south side of the roof level is also built out as inviting seating and garden space. Accessibility to all levels was made possible through the installation of an elevator and three communicating stairs. Plant performed upgrades to the building exterior, utility connections, entries, and surrounding sidewalks. The project also includes specialty functions (theatrical, assembly, science, arts, lounges, etc.), salvage and re-use of existing finishes, and all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
