Meals on Wheels of SF https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/meals-on-wheels-of-sf/ Thu, 04 Jan 2018 16:44:08 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1726 Plant is about to begin preconstruction on a new facility for Meals on Wheels of SF. Meals on Wheels, now delivering over 1.6 million meals per year, has outgrown their existing facility on Fairfax Avenue, a few blocks from Plant HQ, and has purchased a piece of property on Jerrold Street, also just a few blocks away. The new 60,000 square foot facility on 2 levels, will contain a new commercial high production kitchen, cold storage, warehouse, loading dock, logistics and office space. Challenges on the project will be the bay mud soil underlying the site, establishing workable easements with neighbors and the construction of the complicated and extensive kitchen. Upon completion of the new building, we will begin the renovation of the 20,000 square foot existing facility on Fairfax ave, which will include interiors work, new elevators and stairways and other improvements. The new building is expected to be a 13 month project, with the existing building being completed 7 months later. Meals on Wheels is an amazing organization, providing a much needed service to our community, and we are excited to be associated with such a good cause.

Pier 70 – Building 14 https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/pier-70-building-14/ Wed, 03 Jan 2018 21:42:43 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1717 Building 14 was the Heavy Warehouse located at the core of the Bethlehem Steel shipyard of Pier 70, on the southeastern waterfront of San Francisco. The shipyard was originally the Union Iron Works of the 1880’s and then most recently Bethlehem Steel Shipyards of the 1940’s. This district is being protected under the National Register of Historic Places. The work on this building was to completely renovate both exterior and interior of the building. It also included the addition of a mezzanine and seismic bracing. The interior improvements for Obscura Digital were very sparse, including new restrooms, kitchen and a few office spaces on the mezzanine, the reminder of the space will be used as light industrial workshop for this well-known digital production company. We worked very closely with both the landlord and the tenant to make this a very cost effective and elegant buildout closely suited to the tenant’s needs.

Alcatraz Quartermaster Warehouse https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/alcatraz-quartermaster-warehouse/ Fri, 16 Sep 2016 20:35:28 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1487 Built in 1921, the Quartermaster Warehouse is a concrete reinforced building designed as a military storehouse to contain all the supplies for the officers’ quarters.  It later became the battery house and a multi-purpose storage space.  Today it still serves as the main source of power for the entire island.  Logistics of working on an island without permanent power, potable water, and cell phone reception are unique.  Furthermore, most of the work had to be done between September and March to accommodate the federally protected birds.  Most of the crumbling concrete was rehabilitated, new electrical and plumbing systems were added, new roof panels imported from England were installed (and repainted with the famous Alcatraz sign), and a freight lift was added next to new metal stairs — all while the island’s solar power center was kept operational. Furthermore, the east façade was painted in restored Native American political statements from the 1969 Indian Occupation; recreated by several of the original occupiers and their children.

Presidio Knolls School – Pioneer Hall https://www.plantconstruction.com/projects/presidio-knolls-school-pioneer-hall/ Mon, 21 Dec 2015 16:53:08 +0000 http://www.plantconstruction.com/?post_type=projects&p=1247 The Presidio Knolls School was founded in 2008 as a preschool in the Marina district. The popular school quickly outgrew its original site and moved to its current location south of Market Street. With approximately 1.5 acres and multiple buildings, this former Catholic Archdiocese property will allow the school to continue to expand and reach its goal of serving preschool through eighth grade.

To accommodate the school’s growth, several buildings on campus were examined for renovation. The first to be selected was an existing contributing historic structure, renamed Pioneer Hall by the school. The renovation and repurposing of this existing wood-framed building included a voluntary seismic upgrade, lowering of the main floor, improvements to the vertical and horizontal enclosures, and new interior finishes for initial use as temporary classrooms and for future use as a gymnasium and multi-purpose space. This required careful coordination between Plant, the shoring engineer and structural engineer to keep the more than 100-year-old building standing while completing the complex structural upgrades. The newly renovated hall will serve the school well as it continues to grow.
